I had been getting these errors using vobcopy:

(cd0:ata0:0:1:0): SCSI sense: ILLEGAL REQUEST asc:6f,3 (Read of scrambled sector without authentication)
Retrying command (per sense data)
(cd0:ata0:0:1:0): READ(10). CDB: 28 00 00 05 15 67 00 00 01 00
(cd0:ata0:0:1:0): CAM status: SCSI Status Error
(cd0:ata0:0:1:0): SCSI status: Check Condition
(cd0:ata0:0:1:0): SCSI sense: ILLEGAL REQUEST asc:6f,3 (Read of scrambled sector without authentication)
Error 5, Retries exhausted

A bit of googling revealed this may be because of region mismatch: http://bastian.rieck.ru/blog/posts/2007/dvd_problems/, however I now think these issues were probably caused by Macrovision RipGuard and ACP after inspecting the DVD case.

I’m not sure if there is a way to get around this particular copy protection without the use of AnyDVD or similar on Windows, but in any case I decided to turn to the MacMini and Handbrake to rip other DVDs, because I am not sure of the status of libdvdcss on FreeBSD nor strongly motivated to investigate.

  1. Install the latest VLC for OSX
  2. Download Handbrake
  3. Download libdvdcss from http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/libdvdcss/1.2.11/macosx/ per http://lifehacker.com/5888078/vlc-20-breaks-handbrake-dvd-ripping-heres-how-to-fix-it
  4. Rip away – the best setting seems to be ‘High profile’ under ‘Regular’

It takes a while and your MacMini may get pretty hot, but it does seem to work.
